The TV sets themselves are outdated, pre-revolution relics imported from America or sets from Russia over twenty years old; green-hued beasts jimmy-rigged with ancient parts and fantastically adorned like religious altars. The stations broadcast news reports, baseball, educational programs, telenovelas, and Hollywood movies. Whether used for information or as a background for socializing and drinking rum, during broadcast hours, all TVs in Cuba are ON.

All I knew about Cuba was that people drove old American cars and that Ché Guevara was tied with Bob Marley as most popular poster in dorm rooms. Then my friend Erin invited me on a 2-week trip to Havana. The first thing I noticed in Havana was that the city was dark at night. There were no streetlights, porch lights or living-room lamps. It was pitch black except for the faint colorful glow spilling out of open doors everywhere, and it came from the TVs. The light captivated me. For the next two weeks I wandered around, slipping in and out of strangers' living rooms. Each time I came across an open door and a working TV set, I would ask if I could take a picture. The answer was always yes. Nobody seemed to think it was an odd request and it was usually accompanied by a Cuban coffee or rum.

About the Author:

Simone Lueck (b. St. Paul) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She has an MFA from UC San Diego. Her work is marked by an interest in exploring cultural territories colored by notions of identity and performance. Simone's monograph CUBA TV was published by Mark Batty Publishers (2011). The book includes photographs of TV sets inside Havana living rooms. Simone's work THE ONCE AND FUTURE QUEENS (2010) includes pictures of individuals who answered a Craigslist ad soliciting older woman to pose as glamorous movie stars. The series has been exhibited in solo shows at Kopeikin Gallery (Culver City, CA), Musée de la Photographie (Charleroi, Belgium), and Open Eye Gallery (Liverpool, UK) in a show curated by Martin Parr.
