In Using Statistical Methods, Soleman Abu-Bader detects and addresses the gaps between the research and data analysis of the classroom environment and the practitioner s office. This book not only guides social scientists through different tests, but also provides students and researchers alike with information that will help them in their own practice.

With focus on the purpose, rationale, and assumptions made by each statistical test, and a plethora of research examples that clearly display their applicability and function in real-world practice, Professor Abu-Bader creates a step-by-step description of the process needed to clearly organize, choose a test or statistical technique, analyze, interpret, and report research findings.

Features: Updated to reflect latest version of SPSS (Versions 18.0 & 19.0). Additional mathematical and statistical concepts including reliability, effect size, and power. Extended coverage of statistical techniques, with strong focus on tests used in real research situations. Revised online database for users. Student version of SPSS 18.

Note: The SPSS Student version is a limited version of the SPSS Base software for pc and Mac users. Limitations: CD is for home use only and expires thirteen (13) months from date of first installation on one standalone computer. Data files are limited to 50 variables and 1500 cases. SPSS command syntax, and scripting and automation, are not available to the user. SPSS add-on modules cannot be used with the student version.

About the Author:
Soleman H. Abu-Bader (PhD, University of Utah; MSW, Augsburg College) is professor of social work at Howard University and has worked as a social work practitioner and researcher. He is the author of several empirical research articles that focus on the elderly, mental health, welfare, and organizational behavior.
Review:
The text is comprehensive and provides easy-to-follow, practical applications for statistical methods, as well as the theory that undergirds each test. The hands on, SPSS tutorial orientation of the text encourages students to dive in and start swimming. --Sherri Seyfried, Chicago State University

This book is a significant contribution to the pedagogical literature in this area, and one that I am planning on continuing using. . . . The strongest part is its integration of basic stats with the use of the SPSS software package, supported by detailed instructions for basic operations. Particularly helpful are the annotated screenshots, along with discussion of interpretation of findings, and the examples of how the results might be written up. --Christopher Hudson, Salem State College
