Wayne Sundberg is a Fort Collins icon. A teacher of history, an activist for historic preservation and an avid writer of history, Sundberg is known as “Mr. Fort Collins History”.
Sundberg taught history in Fort Collins middle schools for 27 years. He also taught Colorado history as an affiliated professor at Colorado State University.
Sundberg was the chairman of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, where he advocated for the preservation of historic Fort Collins homes and buildings, and the “Old Historic District”.
He was also an original organizer of the Fort Collins Municipal Railway, helping to restore a portion of the city’s trolley line.
He is the author of a previous general history of the city, Historic Fort Collins and also Fort Collins First Waterworks. In addition to books, Sundberg has written numerous articles on Colorado historical topics.
Among his awards and recognitions are the Pioneer Association’s Pioneer of the Year. He was honored by the Colorado Historical Society for his book on The Waterworks, and the Colorado Education Association and the Poudre School District have recognized him for his efforts to introduce middle school students to Fort Collins’ rich history.
