Bernardin de Saint-Pierre est n� en 1737 au Havre, et mort en 1814. D�s l enfance, la lecture de Robinson Cruso� d�cide de sa destin�e : il veut l aventure, et si ses parents l engagent dans des �tudes d ing�nieur, il mettra � profit ses comp�tences pour d�couvrir le monde. Anim� d un esprit rebelle et chevaleresque, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre traverse fortunes et infortunes � travers toute l Europe. En 1768, il part pour l �le de France, appel�e aujourd hui l �le Maurice, et y reste trois ans. A son retour � Paris, il fr�quente les Lumi�res et se lie d une profonde et m�lancolique amiti� avec Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Il commence alors les r�dactions de textes litt�raires, dont Paul et Virginie, en 1787. L utopie qu il d�crit dans son roman rejoint les id�es philosophiques de Rousseau, on y retrouve l �ge d or de l humanit� o� les hommes sans instruction �taient purs et moraux par la simple force de leur sensibilit� et de la nature qui forme pour eux le mod�le de l harmonie et de l innocence.
