Synopsis

This work is a double reflection of America in the first half of the 20th century. It captures the history of the blues, the texts and the tales told from the perspective of Black Americans. Meanwhile, the images are taken by White photographers, who documented the American heartland during the 1930s and 1940s.
It was the U.S. Farm Security Administration that launched the unprecedented campaign to archive America with tens of thousands of photos. Many of the selected photographs have become famous; among them are those of Esther Bubley, John Collier, Jack Delano, Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. The text is in English and French. The songs were selected from more than one thousand couplets recorded between 1925 and 1960.

Jean-Paul Levet is a blues specialist. He transcribes and translates blues texts. He is the author of Talkin That Talk: the Language of Blues, Jazz and Rap, a reference book on the vocabulary of blues and jazz (Hatier, 1992 ; Kargo 2003 ; Outre Mesure, 2010).
