This study, the first systematic description of Schlegel's career and works, revises the traditional false assessment of Schlegel's position in 18th-century German literary life. Of considerable moment for the reevaluation is the image conveyed by contemporary memoirs, letters and reviews, many assembled here for the first time. Schlegel's multisidedness, his Rococo dynamism and stylistic plurality contradict the usual attitudes toward the «sober» literature of the Enlightenment period.
