Im Laufe seiner Karriere als Hofmaler Philipps IV. malte Velázquez eine bemerkenswerte Anzahl von Narrenbildnissen, die durch ihre unkonventionellen Sujets und technische Brillanz hervorragen. In der Studie wird diese Werkgruppe erstmals in ihrem einstigen Bezugssystem verortet und zusammenhängend erforscht. Hängungskontexte werden rekonstruiert, Ikonografien eingehend analysiert und die Bedeutung der Gemälde für Velázquez’ künstlerisches Selbstverständnis herausgestellt. Daneben werden kunst-theoretische Aspekte zur Porträtmalerei und der Kunst der Täuschung detailliert diskutiert. Durch zusätzliche interdisziplinäre Vergleiche mit Narrenfiguren aus Literatur und Theater erschlieerschließen sich Velázquez’ Narrenporträts erstmals in einem umfassenden kunst- und kulturgeschichtlichen Kontext.
