This book examines the investment in Widening Participation outreach events and seeks to address the issue of whether they are achieving the desired outcomes. The focus is upon Keele University¿s year eleven Higher Education Summer School 2007. Over one hundred students from throughout the West Midlands region participated in the week long residential event held at Keele campus in June 2007. It examines literature detailing varying types of Widening Participation initiatives within the UK, and investigates the funding opportunities that are available for such activities. It focuses on the immediate impact that Keele University¿s Year eleven Higher Education Summer School 2007 had upon its teenage participants. Finally this book, explores literature relating to the barriers that prevent young people entering higher education and attempts to gauge the successfulness of Widening Participation initiatives, upon its participants. This research should be especially useful to widening participation practitioners, Aimhigher groups, and HEFCE.

About the Author:
Jennifer H. Birchall, MSc: studied a BA(Hons) in Sociology and Criminology at Manchester Metropolitan University. She worked for Keele University's Widening Participation Division and in 2008 obtained an MSc in Events Management from Manchester Metropolitan University.
