La región Mixteca de Oaxaca, México se identifica particularmente por sus características semiáridas, su suelo se encuentra altamente erosionado, por lo tanto su topografía es agreste, ríos jóvenes e intermitentes con secciones en forma de v, predomina el material rocoso en el subsuelo principalmente calizas sanas. Tiene una tasa alta de deforestación y un alto índice de erosión, por el mal manejo de los suelos.La función de una presa es retener el flujo de agua, que en algunas cuencas se presenta de forma rápida y en grandes volúmenes en tiempos relativamente cortos, por lo que se ve transitar este flujo sin poder aprovecharlo. Por lo anterior se construyen este tipo de obras a fin de regular estos flujos y hacerlos transitar más lentamente con el objetivo de cubrir las demandas de agua, tener un almacenamiento para controlar la cantidad y el tiempo que se utilizará para los diversos fines que principalmente son de consumo humano y agrícola.

Ingeniero Civil, Egresado del Instituto Politécnico Nacional en la Ciudad de México. Maestría en Ciencias en el Instituto Tecnológico de Oaxaca, México. Ha laborado en la iniciativa privada en la construcción de obras y en 1990 ingresó al CIIDIR-IPN-Unidad Oaxaca, recibió el Premio Tecnos2005, por trabajar con las represas.
