It was founded by Gavin Hamilton (1723-1798), one of the most successful English archaeologists of the 18th century. His tireless efforts and sure aesthetic sense led his clients to exhibit the collection in a specially designed gallery in Lansdowne House. This famous private collection, assembled between 1760 and 1820, was at the center of Lansdowne House in London before being exhibited around the world after 1930. The author reconstructed the collection for these two volumes. The first volume is dedicated to the genesis of this most important English private collection of classical art and presents the staging of the works of art. The catalog volume is dedicated to the individual works in detail and locates them in Roman art history. These volumes are an outstanding contribution to the history of European collections and at the same time offer comprehensive information on classical art. Language : English text - Coll. A 10.
