Items related to Tango Danza Glossary: Key Tango Argentino Dance Terms
This glossary contains figures, concepts, references and terms related to tango dancing. Its purpose is not to teach the secrets of the dance, or to synthesize over one hundred years of history. Its intention is to leave a record, a body of definitions, as a guide to the reader and to future generations.
The motivation for writing it was the neglect of our own, rich language, and the need to unify terms and concepts. It seems strange that, being the creators of the tango, we as yet have no glossary that explains the Spanish words related to it.
Many of the words found here and their definitions were taken from different writers, Internet sites, dancers, teachers and television programs. They are terms which have appeared in print or in programs, have been used throughout the tango's history, and are known by the public.
In practical terms, there is a difference between reality, information and documents. We find that the origin of the tango is largely unclear, that most information is by word of mouth, and that we accept a photo or a police report as if they were reliable sources. These three phenomena (reality, information and documents) both delayed and enriched the development of this book. The greatest challenge has been to find trustworthy sources, and to crosscheck and synthesize data.
Readers can verify the definitions, names and dates through the bibliography or the Internet.
As a point of interest, let's observe that figures can be classified in three ways, by:
Mechanics (Voleo, Barrida, etc.),
Object (Abanico, Palanca, etc.),
Intention (Arrepentida, Fuga, etc.)
There is also a frequent use of diminutives, in referring to some figures (Corridita, Voleíto, Mordidita).
In addition, we have discussed different connotations for some words, to show their use in everyday language.
Naturally, the list of terms will increase in the coming years. New figures will be established, others will fall into disuse. A few will need a new description, while others will be refined.
This book includes a section on different tango styles. It is the first written treatise on this subject. The text was reviewed and approved by professionals who are highly respected in the field. Readers who disagree may contact the author and submit their own texts and sources. In this way we will move closer to the truth.
A final section includes common expressions.
To create a complete glossary would be virtually impossible. The work never ends, and will never satisfy everyone.

About the Author:
Gustavo Javier Benzecry Sabá was born on April 26th, 1959, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He obtained a BS degree in Journalism in 1982.
For fifteen years he conducted various radio programmes and edited various graphic media. He then worked almost simultaneously as a Chemistry Teacher, Musician, Videomaker and Graphic Designer. His first book "La mujer de los dioses, cuentos fantásticos", published by Ed. Vinciguerra, appeared in 1999. He first discovered Tango Danza in the late 1990s. He very soon became Assistant to Dancer and Teacher Virginia Riveiro, thus starting on his teaching career. Benzecry Sabá also studied with Rodolfo Dinzel, Stella Barba and Roberto Herrera. He has been giving classes at Palermo neighbourhood since 2003, specializing in technique for men.
