Since her first smash-hit fashion show in New York's Hotel Delmonico thirty-five years ago, designer Hanae Mori has gone from strength to strength, establishing herself as the preeminent Japanese couturiere of the modern period.
Mori's trademark was the butterfly and, like a butterfly, her career has been restless: never confining herself just to the glitz of seasonal shows in Paris, London, Milan, Munich and New York, she has designed for the ballet (Nureyev's Cinderella), the movies, theater, and opera (appropriately, Madama Butterfly), and has also created designs for shoes, stockings, gloves, ties, belts, handbags, umbrellas, sunglasses, aprons, carpets, and lacquerware.
In this pictorial celebration of her work, she has personally selected over 80 examples of her best creations, from the 1960s to the present day. Together they form a retrospective of a true artist's lifetime achievements.

From the Publisher:
COMMENTS ON HANAE MORI'S WORK

Rudolf Nureyev: "I loved working with her. She had an incredible eye for detail, trying to make absolutely sure her designs suited the movements of a dance."

Michael J. Mansfield (former U.S. ambassador to Japan): "Hanae Mori is without question one of the world's greatest and grandest in the art of high design."

Seiji Ozawa: "How hard she worked in those early days to come to grips with Western culture as an Oriental, to acquire an international reputation by extending her activities overseas."

About the Author:
Hanae Mori was born in Shimane Prefecture. After graduating from Tokyo Women's Christian University, she married, and attended dressmaking school. She opened her first atelier in Tokyo in 1951, and over the next seven years designed costumes for hundreds of movies, including Ozu's Early Autumn. In 1965, she successfully presented her first New York collection, "East Meets West." Twelve years later she opened an haute couture showroom in Paris, leading to her appointment as a member of La Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

Since then she has actively sought to promote the interaction of East-West aesthetic values through collections shown internationally, costume designs for operas like Madama Butterfly and Elektra, ballets like Cinderella, and musicals like the Japanese Evita. She has also created new uniforms for flight attendants and Japanese participants at the Olympic Games, as well as her own perfume.

Among her international awards are La Croix de Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres; Chevalier dans l'Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur and the Japanese Order of Culture. Her published books include Hanae Mori 1960-1989 and Fashion- A Butterfly That Flew Across the Border.
