About the Author:
Albert Lewis Kanter was born in Baranovitch Russia on April 11, 1897. He immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1904. They settled in Nashua, New Hampshire. He quit high school in 1913 because of his father's poor health and started working as a door to door salesman of books. He moved to Savannah, Georgia, married, had three children, moved to Miami, where he was wiped out by a hurricane, and moved to New York where he got a job as a publisher's representative selling books, including comic books. He was having a hard time convincing his children to read the literary classics. They preferred to read comic books instead. That gave him the idea to reduce the literary classics to comic book form and hope that after reading the comic books his children would then read the original books. Unfortunately, it did not work out that wa,y but his comic books were an immediate great success. In 1953 he started Classics Illustrated Junior with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The line eventually numbered 77 fairy and folk tale, myth and legend titles, ending publication in 1971. In 1967, after years of declining readership, Kanter sold the line to Patrick Frawey. Frawley only produced two new comics, but he reprinted with new covers several of the older comics. Frawley was not successful and shut down the operation on April 21, 1971. Albert Lewis Kanter died two years later on March 17, 1973.
