This is the first publication of the correspondence between A.M. Gor'kii and M.I. Budberg as well as between her children and M. Gor'kii. Mariia Budberg (Zakrevskaia, then Benkendorf) was a close friend, secretary, and assistant to M. Gor'kii for almost fifteen years. She was called the Russian Mata Hari or the "iron lady" (by N. Bereberova), because of her close relationships with the Russian and English intelligence services in various periods of her life. She allegedly poisoned Gor'kii. These letters make up for a deficiency in knowledge of her real role in publishing, creative and public work she did at Gor'kii's request, and shows her place in Gor'kii's life.
