Since he first appeared on the Czech art scene in the mid-1960s as part of the return to figural expression, Jirí Anderle (born 1936) has earned a unique place not only in the Czech context but internationally as well. He achieved recognition above all for his graphic art, in which he developed a unique artistic language based on the masterful use and combination of various printmaking techniques. His prints won prizes and commendations at numerous international biennials and triennials of graphic art from the 1960s onwards. The wide-ranging work that Jirí Anderle has created over more than fifty years includes prints, drawings, paintings and sculptures.

About the Author:

Jirí Anderle was born in 1936 in the Czech Republic. His work was exhibited for the first time at the Guests of the Hollar House exhibition in Prague in 1962. In 1968 he exhibited for the first time in the USA: Recent Graphics from Prague, Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C. (Jan and Meda Mladek Collection). He has staged solo exhibitions at venues such as the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm (1982), the Prague National Gallery (1995), the Imperial Stables of Prague Castle (1996), the Cincinnati Art Museum (2008), the Prague City Gallery (2009) and Municipal House, Prague (2016-17). His work is represented in the collections of many museums and galleries in the Czech Republic and other countries. In 2004 he received the prestigious Vladimír Boudník Prize for his lifetime contribution to Czech graphic art. In 2006 he was awarded the Medal of Merit by the Czech President for his contribution to Czech culture and art.
