Makwana is presently working as a Professor in PG Department of Sociology at Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat. He held the position as Honorary Director of Dr Ambedkar Chair from 2010 to 2013. He has been working as the Convener of RC-18, Sociology of Crime and Deviance under Indian Sociological Society since 2008 and as the Secretary of GSS for the period from 2012 to 2014. Prof. Makwana was awarded with Dr Ambedakar Award along with cash prize of Rupees one lakh for his milestone social work. He received Sardar Patel Award for training of effective leadership and empowerment of women Sarpanch in Panchayat. He has Bharat Shiksha Ratan Award to his credit for his excellent contribution in education, research, and extension and youth development. His areas of specialisation are political sociology, weaker section and women studies. He has written 18 books
