About the Author:
Sachindra Kumar Maity took his B. A. (Honours), M. A. in Ancient Indian History and Culture and M. A. in History from the University of Calcutta; and subsequently did his Ph.D. from London University under the able guidance of prof. A. L. Basham.
Since 1956, he had been teaching Ancient Indian and World History at the University of Jadavpur, Calcutta upto his retirement in 1988. He was also Head of the Department of History of the same University. Immediately after that he was appointed as Research professor of Indology, Research Department, Government Sanskrit College, Calcutta. At present he is Senior Research Fellow, Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi. He was the General President of All India Numismatic Society at its Guwahati Session and was President of the History Section of the All India Oriental Conference, Pune, 1993.
Dr. Maity has a good number of research publications to his credit. His research papers have been published in many reputed journals in India and abroad. He is author of Economic Life of Northern India in the Gupta Period, Corpus of Bengal Inscriptions, Vol. I (with Prof. Ramaranjan Mukherjee), Early Indian Coins and Currency System, Imperial Guptas and Their Times, Gupta Civilization-A Study, Freedom Movement in Midnapore, Masterpiece of Hoysala Art, Masterpieces of Pallava Art, Cultural Heritage of Ancient India, Indological Studies (Ed. Prof. D. C. Sircar Volume), Oriental Studies (Ed. Prof. A. L. Basham Volume) and Religious and Cultural Heritage of Birbhum-A study, Eighteen research scholars had obtained their P h. D. Degree from the Jadavpur University under his guidance. He is one of the front-rank Indologists of India.
