Baldev Raj, FNAE, FASc., FNASc., is a Distinguished Scientist and Director of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam. He is an internationally known expert in materials characterization using conventional and advanced non-destructive evaluation techniques (NDT). He is currently steering many successful programmes at IGCAR, involving design of fast breeder reactors, nuclear fuel reprocessing, electronics and computer science, development of materials, fabrication technologies, non-destructive testing techniques, physical and mechanical metallurgy, numerical modelling, failure analysis and life extension. He has won many awards and honors, notable among them being the National Metallurgist Award (1986), Materials Research Society of India Medal (1992), AEWG(I) Gold Medal (1994), Vasvik Award (1994), G.D. Birla Gold Medal of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) (1996), Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Gold Medal of the Institution of Engineers (2000). He has 550 research publications, 26 books and 15 patents to his credit, and is on the editorial board of several international journals. K Bhanu Sankara Rao, FASM, FNAE, FASc, currently heads the Mechanical Metallurgy Division at IGCAR. His research interests include materials development, creep, low cycle fatigue, creep fatigue interaction, thermomechanical fatigue, life prediction and structure property correlations. He received the Best Metallurgist Award from the Ministry of Steel in 1995, Binani Gold Medal of IIM in 1990, SAIL Gold Medal of IIM in 2000, and the Materials Research Society of India Medal in 1997. He is a member of the editorial board of the International Materials Reviews (since 1995), key reader of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions and Materials Engineering and Performance (since 1996), and the Chief Editor of Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals (since 2003).
