This volume brings together, perhaps for the first time with such scholarly rigour, twelve studies of some premier educational institutions in India. These are: Gurukuls in southeast Punjab; St. Stephen's College; Delhi (Zakir Husain) College; Indraprastha College; Jamia Millia Islamia; Aligarh Muslim University; Nadwat al-Ulama, Lucknow; Patna College; Santiniketan; Presidency College, Calcutta; Elphinstone College; and Christian Medical College, Vellore. What was the vision that inspired, say, Syed Ahmad Khan and Rabindranath Tagore, to conceive of an educational centre? What meanings did they and the generations thereafter attach to Western learning? Again, how did gurukuls in Haryana and the Presidency College and the Jamia Millia Islamia, all located in the same city, respond to nationalist activities? What has been the impact of the changes that have taken place after Independence? Finally, are there some lessons to be drawn from the experiences and performance of our educational institutions? Each essay maps the beginning and the subsequent growth of an educational centre, embedded in the changing ethno-cultural and socio-political matrix from colonial to postcolonial times.
