Lord Vishnu is the defender of the forces of goodness. He took various incarnations, in their defence, in the forms of Meen (Fish), Kachchhap(Turtle) or Narsimha ( ManLion).
In answer to the prayers of the devotees, he rushes to their rescue. Vishnu has promised- Whenever the forces of darkness will be in ascendance, I will take incarnation as a human on the earth to correct the balance.
When as result of the curse of Sage Narada, the soldiers of Shiva took births as Ravana and Kumbhkarna, and then Vishnu took incarnation as Rama
