The phylum Gastrotricha remains one of the least known lower invertebrate groups of microscopic animals inhabiting freshwater brackish and marine habitats of the Indian subcontinent. Many areas in this region still need extensive and intensive explorations for discovery diagnosis and description of this fauna while the biological diversity is being badly threatened with extinction due to environmental degradation. Hitherto as there is no publication on the phylum in the Fauna of India series the authors made an attempt to compile and publish information known on the fauna. The fauna particularly from interstitial zone provided quite fascinating diverse and highly modified in structure to suit biological demands of this dynamic environment presenting an excellent example of ecological convergence in evolution. Work on freshwater Gastrotricha is very scanty with just a few publications. This work gives an account of 76 species of the Gastrotricha of which 48 marine species 3 of fresh and brackish water species and 25 purely fresh water species. It gives brief description figures biology binomics ecology and distribution. It is earnestly hoped that this work would be quite useful in understanding the basic diversity of the fauna and inspire further research in the field in this region including a variety of interesting ecological investigations. Thus the book deeply deserves a place on the library shelf of all academic institutions of higher learning interested in the study in our country. 169 pp. Seller Inventory # 52143
