The texts critique the way in which the narratives of nationhood and womanhood naturalize and essentialize difference and hierarchy. The authors explore uses of sexualized/gendered metaphors of state fatherhood and motherhood in defining the distribution of power within that space.

About the Author:

Julie Mostov is Professor of Political Theory, Drexel University, Philadelphia. She has written on democratic theory (particularly, sovereignty and citizenship), gender and nation, and the politics of national identity in Southeastern Europe/former Yugoslavia.

Rada Ivekovic is a philosopher and feminist. She worked in the former Yugoslavia until 1991 and the partition of that country, and since then she has been teaching and living in France. She has a PhD from Delhi University.
