From Commentary p. 99 (English text section): "Adam Kaczkowski's album The Gates of Tragedy is not an exhibition of our country's sites of martyrdom and national memorials. Most of the photographs show concentration camps. They are quite freely arranged and juxtaposed with photographs of other places of martyrdom chosen by the author. The selection presented in the album is a reminiscence of the author's visits to the scenes of these crimes. It is also a record of the deep emotions that he felt when he visited these places of martyrdom. The album does not show any other camps or memorials. Adam Kaczkowski's photos contain just some of those realities which have risen to become symbols of martyrdom and commemoration. Such realities includes gates, railway lines, smokestacks - symbols of the last journey, the way to nowhere, to death. Then, there are fragments of barbed wire, poles, spiteful inscriptions, dark interiors with windows overlooking camp grounds - symbols of slavery, cruelty and suffering. Finally, there are empty spaces, grass, trees and the sky - symbols of dead silence, pain and meditation. The photographs also show parts of monuments, plaques and crucifixes, whose symbolic meaning is deeply moving and which in the author's eyes have taken in the status of national relics...." Hardcover, black embossed leather binding with white titles, 10.75 x 10.75 inches, 140 pages, printed on heavy black paper, 70+ black and white photographs of concentration camps, including Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka, Belzec, Lublin, Plaszow and Stutthof, commentary provided in Polish, English, French, German, and Russian.
