She is forced to battle against the exigencies of a cruel guardian, a harsh employer, and the rigid social order that circumscribes her life and position.

Su afán de superación y su deseo de cambiar su situación la hacen una buena estudiante, que es capaz de enseñar a la hija de Rochester. También es importante decir que es sorprendida por la noticia de que un tío suyo, John Eyre, le dejó toda su herencia, pero esta mujer no tiene interés en el dinero y lo comparte con sus familiares. Valores humanos como la lealtad, el altruismo y la empatía son sus verdaderas riquezas y por eso decide casarse con Rochester, aunque esté ciego. Asimismo, es innovadora en la forma de pensar y de actuar de la protagonista, Jane Eyre, y en su forma de ver el mundo. Es considerada por muchos como una de las novelas precursoras del feminismo y en su época fue muy polémica debido a esta actitud. Ha tenido varias adaptaciones al cine, la más moderna data de 1996, en cuyo reparto podemos encontrar a la premiada Anna Paquin (interpretando a Jane Eyre de joven) o a la hija del cantante francés Serge Gainsbourg, Charlotte. Además de Geraldine Chaplin y William Hurt. Pero no es esta la adaptación más famosa de la novela al cine, ya que Orson Welles y Joan Fontaine protagonizaron una película bastante recordada en el cine clásico, caracterizando a Rochester y Eyre, respectivamente.
