About the Author:
Juan Manuel (Escalona, Toledo, 1282-1348). España. Era sobrino de Alfonso X el Sabio y nieto de Fernando III y pertenecía a la nobleza. Su padre era el Infante don Manuel, nieto del rey Fernando III de Castilla el Santo. Juan Manuel era muy rico y se dice que podía cabalgar durante todo un día sin alcanzar el límite de sus propiedades. Había heredado de su padre el título de Duque de Villena, donde pasaba temporadas dedicado a la caza reflejadas en su Libro de la caza. Desde muy joven combatió con destreza y se destacó, junto al rey Sancho IV (su primo), en la Batalla contra los musulmanes del Salado. En 1299 se casó con doña Isabel, infanta de Mallorca. Poco después ella murió y Juan Manuel se casó con doña Constanza de Aragón, hija del rey Jaime II. Algunos años más tarde, otra vez viudo, se casó con doña Blanca Núñez. Fue regente de Castilla durante la minoría de Alfonso XI (1321-1325), y combatió junto a éste contra los musulmanes en la batalla de Algeciras (1343). Su hija Constanza estuvo casada con Pedro de Portugal, episodio reflejado en Reinar después de morir, de Luis Vélez de Guevara (obra publicada por Linkgua). Hacia 1345 abandonó la política y se dedicó a la literatura y la meditación religiosa, murió en 1348 en Córdoba. Muchos de sus escritos se han perdido, como el Libro de los Cantares, colección de poesías y Reglas cómo se debe trovar, el más antiguo tratado castellano de versificación. Escribió asimismo el Libro de los Estados, varios textos históricos y el Libro infinito, llamado también de los castigos.
