“Papi in Posa,” or “Papal Portraiture,” first shown in the Braschi Palace – home of the Museum of Rome – in 2004 and later in Washington, DC’s John Paul II Cultural Center, was a historic and unprecedented exposition of masterpieces from major international museums – such as the Vatican Museums – and prestigious private collections.

It also stands out because it was one of the most important expositions of portrait painting ever, because of both the outstanding quality and the considerable number of paintings and sculptures offered – executed by Europe’s leading artists from the last five centuries – and the great spiritual and social significance of the personages portrayed: the greatest Pontiffs, who from the 16th century to the present, have sat in the Chair of Saint Peter.

About the Author:
FRANCESCO PETRUCCI is an architect and a refined and sensitive expert on Roman Baroque, as well as the creator and editor of numerous events in Rome and surroundings.
Review:
The five century collection of sacred portraiture seen at John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington D.C. in 2004 is presented in curator and editor Francesco Petrucci's Papi in Posa: 500 Years of Papal Portraiture. From Julius II to John Paul II, including a posthumous painting of John Paul, the portraits and some sculpture (including an opening piece of Saint Peter) are seen here, with the text providing a profile of the popes, but largely also of the artists who portrayed them. Fifteen authors contribute to the text. The portraits for the exhibit, first seen at Braschi Palace in Rome, were lent by the Vatican Museums, various collections in Italy, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the hosting center in the U.S. Today's Books editor Lex Ticonderoga puts Papi in Posa on the 'A-List!' --Today's Books
