This authoritative catalogue raisonne covers over four decades of creative output that comprise Fontana's career. His intuitive rendering of the intrinsic dynamism of contemporary life into images is represented across the early sculptures to the most recent "ambienti": works designed to be neither painting nor sculpture but "forms, color, sound through spaces." In the 1930s Fontana was a leading exponent of a generation of Expressionists. In the 40's and 50's, he was the protagonist of "informal" Spatialism. In the 60's, Fontana became a point of reference for new pictorial and plastic expression. This historical and critical profile brings a huge body of intense, expressive work into focus. This catalog was carried out in collaboration with the Lucio Fontana Foundation, making it the definitive publication on the artist.
About the Author:
Enrico Crispolti is Professor of History of Contemporary Art at the University of Siena. A historian of nineteenth and twentieth century art and a militant art critic, Crispolti is the author of countless monographs and, in addition to the general catalog of Fontana, he has edited the general catalog of the work of Baj and Guttuso. Nini Ardemagni Laurini is president of Fondazione Lucio Fontana in Milan. Valeria Ernesti was vice president of Fondazione Lucio Fontana in Milan.“
