He is best known for his work on Mithras and the Oriental Religions in the Roman Empire but published more than 1000 items on a wide range of subjects. This volume collects all his publications on the history and the spread of Manichaeism. It is one of the seven thematic volumes of the Scripta Minora, the sub-series of the Bibliotheca Cumontiana, which edits his collected works. The book contains a critical historiographical introduction by the specialist of Manichaeism and oriental christianities, Michel Tardieu, who analyses the methodology Cumont used in the scientific context of his era, in particular with regard to the position of Manichaeism within the history of religions, and the links between Manichaeism, Zoroastrianism, the cult of Mithras and Christianity. Furthermore the introduction offers a bibliographical update which lists the most important publications which continued or renewed the work of Cumont. Researchers are offered both a thematic index and an index of ancient and modern authors. Danny Praet is professor of ancient philosophy and history of Christianity at Ghent University and editor of the Scripta Minora Series within the Bibliotheca Cumontiana. Michel Tardieu is honorary professor at the Collège de France, where he was appointed, from 1991 to 2008, to the Chair of History of Syncretisms in Late Antiquity. He was the Director of the Institute for the History of Oriental Christianities. Annelies Lannoy is postdoctoral researcher of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) at Ghent University, co-editor of several volumes of Cumontiana and a specialist of the work of Alfred Loisy and Franz Cumont. Annunziata Di Rienzo is doctoral researcher at La Sapienza University in Rome and Ghent University, in a joint PhD supervised by Alberto Camplani, Koen De Temmerman and Flavia Ruani, on the topic of Syriac hagiography: the edition with translation and commentary of several saints' lives. Franz Cumont (1868-1947) fut un des plus importants historiens des religions anciennes et son influence scientifique continue à ce jour.
