This publication is the culmination of years of study by Thiel-Cramer, former head of the department of Spanish dance at the College of Dance in Stockholm. Her aim is an historical overview of flamenco, with chapters dedicated to investigations of its origins, descriptions of attendant regions and their characteristic songs, examinations of song forms, studies of dance and guitar music, and reviews of the leading artists of yesterday and today. Analyses of dance movements or song lyrics is beyond the scope of this primer. Since there are few English-language books that cover the same material and because there has been a renewed and steadily growing interest in this art, librarians will likely find this book fills an information gap. Abundantly illustrated and easy to read (despite the occasional awkward translation) this will be a useful addition to any size collection.
