Painting in Hungary has always been incredibly versatile. It has preserved its unique Hungarian blend while continuously kept pace and co-existed with mainstream universal art from which it had been inseparable and still is. Hungarian artists have experimented together with their fellow artists abroad but also followed their own route.
These painters were welcome in Italy, France and felt at home in Vienna, Berlin or Munich. Meanwhile, they put little Hungarian townships like Giallo, Nyergestijfalu, Zebegeny, Szentendre, Nagybanya, Szolnok, Kecskernet, Szentes or H6dmez6vasarhely on the map of European art.
Unfortunately our present volume contains a mere 120 masterpieces. Why these particular paintings? Why not another, quite different selection of 100 or 1000 pictures, also of the highest quality? Our experts suffered through many exhausting months of careful considerations to reach the fragile compromise of the presented list of works. Of their points of view the analyses of each painting might give the clues. One thing is certain, though. The masterpieces shown in this volume would undoubtedly be most welcome in all the galleries and private collections on Earth.
