From Publishers Weekly:
These four feminist studies of Mexican and Salvadoran women in the United States focus on the changes in gender and family relationships that result from the migration experience. Poggio (Univ. of Maryland) and Woo (Univ. of Guadalajara) review the sparse literature on female migration and lament the invisibility of women in most previous migration studies. Their research shows that women appear only as dependent members of a family unit headed by a male who makes decisions and supports the family financially. Basing their work on qualitative interviews with Mexican and Salvadoran women in the United States, the authors show that women are actually active decision-makers in the migration process; they conclude with the hope that future socio-demographic studies of Mexican and Central American migration will focus more on women. This insightful book will interest women's studies, Latino studies, and Latin American studies scholars, as well as social service providers to Mexican and Salvadoran immigrants in the United States. Recommended primarily for academic libraries, it may also be of interest in large public libraries serving Mexican or Salvadoran communities. Lisa M. Reynolds, Bloomington, IN
