Book Description William Farquhar Payson, 1932. Decorative Cloth. Book Condition: Good +. No Jacket. First Edition. The Quest of the Romanoff Treasure by Armand Hammer was published by William Farquhar Payson, New York, in cooperation with the Stratford Press, Inc., in 1932. Not an ex-library copy, this 79-year-old, 5 1/2" X 8", 241-page, Signed First Edition offering is in G+ condition. This book evidences some modest yellowing of text's pages, some staining from original glue on front and back endpapers, and there is webbing visible between back loose end page and adjacent blank page as well as between pages 180-181 of text. This offering is SIGNED, beneath an Inscription, by Dr. Armand Hammer, and dated October 21, 1932, on upper-half portion of front loose end page. From Foreword, contributed by the author's longtime friend, Walter Duranty, "Armand Hammer's book is like a motion picture of ten thrilling years in the life of an amazing country. He came to Moscow at what was perhaps the most critical period in Soviet history, when exhaustion, caused by civil war and foreign intervention and blockade, was about to culminate in the great famine of 1921, and Lenin himself was compelled to make a profound, if temporary, sacrifice of socialist theory and return to a system of private enterprise at first not superficially remote as Capitalism. .The story, [commencing in the late summer of 1921], is told simply, with no attempt at psychological analysis or literary artifice. It is what it is meant to be--a series of events and persons, sharply etched as they passed through the writer's ken. It was my fortune to see much of what Dr. Hammer tells, and in some cases to share part of it with him. I can guarantee that he has set down on paper a true and faithful record, and have much pleasure in recommending the book most heartily to everyone who is interested in the U.S.S.R." Twenty-three-year-old Armand Hammer, who in July, 1921, was traveling to Russia for the purpose of performing field hospital relief work in the treatment of victims of the growing famine. His agenda would undergo some unexpected revisions, in time, and bring him into direct contact with Lenin and his inner circle of lieutenants and strategists. In future years, Armand Hammer would serve as an unofficial adviser, regarding the Soviet Union, to a significant number of U.S. Presidents. Complementing this volume are some 16 black and white photographs, beginning with the Frontispiece, picturing the Imperial Crown of the Romanoffs. Also included is a list of said Illustrations, and an Appendix featuring more detailed descriptions of any photographs showing various other jewels from the Romanoff Collection(which at publication time was generally valued at $500,000,000), as well as a couple brief letters from Lenin to Hammer during the time span covered in the book. If you are knowledgeable of Hammer's work, or just interested in the romantic, often turbulent history of Russia, you can't miss with this choice. Thank you very much!!. Signed by Author(s).
