Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this important local history of the Mexican land grant, Rancho San Juan Cajon de Santa Ana, located in present-day Orange County, California. The grant encompassed the present-day cities of Anaheim, Fullerton, and Placentia. ~SP03~ Author Virginia L. Carpenter (1910 - 2004) was a respected local historian and author whose other books included Canada de la Brea: Ghost Rancho; Placentia: A Pleasant Place; and A Child's History of Placentia. Co-author Erlinda P. Ontiveros (1894 - 1998) gathered material on Ontiveros family genealogy; her husband was a great-grandson of Juan Pacifico Ontiveros (1795 - 1877), a corporal at the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel and later mayordomo (foreman) of Mission San Juan Capistrano. In 1825, Juan Pacifico Ontiveros married Maria Martina Osuna (1809 - 1898), step daughter of Tomas Olivera, grantee of Rancho Tepusquet. With the cession of California to the United States following the Mexican-American War, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided that the land grants would be honored. As required by the Land Act of 1851, a claim for Rancho San Juan Cajon de Santa Ana was filed with the Public Land Commission in 1852, and the grant was patented to Juan Patricio Ontiveras in 1877. Contents: Foreword; Acknowledgements; The Ontiveros Come to California (1769-1782); The Ontiveros Genealogy (1720-1895); Trouble in the Army (1782-1795); Beginning of the Ranchos (1784-1830s); Josef Ontiveros Petitions for a Rancho (1814-1835); Juan Pacifico Ontiveros Becomes a Ranchero (1835-1837); Life on a Rancho (1784-1830s); More Documents and the Leandry Lawsuit (1839-1843); The Canada de la Brea Deal (1835-1905); The United States Land Commission Acts (1850-1857); Ontiveros Family Affairs (1843-1879); Tepusquet Rancho and the Town of Anaheim (1855-1857); The Last of Rancho San Juan Cajon de Santa Ana (1863-1970); A New Home for the Ontiveros (1800-1831); The Granting of Rancho Tepusquet (1816-1848); The Oliveras and the Rancho (1848-1855); Juan Pacifico Ontiveros Buys Rancho Tepusquet (1855-1857); Life on Rancho Tepusquet (1856-1800s); Trouble with Rancho Ownership (1874-1876); The Ontiveros Children Take Over the Rancho (1880-1900); Conclusion; Notes; Maps; Genealogy Charts by Erlinda Ontiveros; Bibliography; Index; Key to Disenos.
