About this Item

With 6 full-page engraved plates. Contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments. Bookplate of S. Kramer. Third edition (first printed in 1680) of a valuable illustrated treatise on anatomy and disease. This comprehensive work depicts the human body, detailing the brain, nerves, musculature and organs, as well as examines various illnesses, diseases and deformities. Whereas most seventeenth-century French anatomies were either textbooks or highly theoretical, this work pragmatically approaches the topic with both anatomical information and anecdotal discussions of ailments. Sieur de Saint Hilaire (fl. 1665-1698) is believed to have been a French physician, but little is known about him and few of his works survive. This book went into several editions during the last half of the seventeenth century. Bookseller Inventory # 14326
