2 volumes in one (paginated separately), 4to (320 x 196mm). [xxiii], 702pp.; 96pp. Title printed in red and black with engraved vignette. Double columns of text in Latin with Hebrew. 19th-century vellum, ms. title to spine; (title lightly browned, somewhat loose at hinge, with minor tear at lower right, some occasional spots; lightly soiled, some chips). Title stamped with ownership stamp of B. Morgernstern of New York. First Edition. Melchior Leidekker, Dutch Calvinistic theologian and Professor at Utrecht, was born at Middelburg in 1642. While a student at the university in Utrecht, Leidekker had paid special attention to Biblical studies, and, guided by a learned rabbi, made great progress in the exploration of Biblical lore. Leidekker is best remembered for this his archaeological treatise entitled De Republica Hebraeoarum, which is one of the largest collections ever written on the wide subject of Hebrew antiquities, and exhibits vast stores of scriptural, rabbinical, philological and historical learning. Added to the interest of the subject are dissertations on the Hebrew laws and customs, political and religious, which are interwoven in a historical narrative. The six dissertations of this appendix, whatever may be thought of the authorís views, are valuable for their learning, and interesting as closely bearing on the questions now raised on the Mosaic cosmogony. Important work constructing a chronological account of Jewish history. Bookseller Inventory # 6584
