About this Item

Bremner, a successful Scottish music publisher, was commissioned by the Edinburgh town council to print the present work in order to promote the church music reform movement known as the Monymusk Revival. This second edition, enhanced and enlarged with "considerable Additions; particularly, Instructions for Song; and, A Plan for teaching a Croud" [sic], followed the first of 1756 and was sold at Bremner's music shop at the Harp and Hautboy. Three => tipped-in oversized, folding plates show music scales, note durations, and other essential elements; styles of ornamentation; and music snippets designed to illustrate the lessons in the text. => The final 72 pages consist of engraved music for three to five parts. Uncommon: ESTC, WorldCat, and NUC locate only seven U.S. institutional holdings. Provenance: Charles Holbrook Library of the Pacific School of Religion (properly released, with bookplate laid in). 8vo in 4s (16 cm, 6.25"). xix, [1], 64, 72 pp.; 3 fold. plts. ESTC T116195. Contemporary spotted sheep framed in double gilt fillets, rebacked with similar calf, spine with gilt-stamped leather title and author labels and blind-ruled raised bands; original leather edges rubbed and chipped, gently refurbished for stability. Title-page verso with rubber-stamped numeral; one page with rubber-stamp in lower portion, touching four words without obscuring sense. Endpapers and first and last few leaves with offsetting to margins. First folding plate with old repairs to tears along folds, second plate with lowest portion torn away (last three lines of music now lacking), third plate with tear starting along lowest fold. Text pages faintly age-toned with occasional light spots of foxing; engraved music pages with some offsetting. => Bestsellers in their day, none of the first few editions of this are now common, particularly the first Edinburgh printings.
