About this Item

Expounding upon the verse "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life," Flavel expounds upon custody of the thoughts and senses, avoiding occasions of sin, and other spiritual disciplines. John Flavel (1630??91) was a minister of Dartmouth, England, until he was ejected as a nonconformist in 1662. He continued to preach in the area and authored many works of practical piety. First printed in 1668, this had its first American edition in Boston, 1726; this is apparently the third American edition. 12mo (13.5 cm, 5.25"). 180 pp. Evans 28676; ESTC W19457. On Flavel, see: Dictionary of National Biography. Contemporary sheep, dry and gone to red with some peeling; acids from the binding have darkened early and late leaves, especially at edges. Light browning and some other staining or soiling; some dog-earing and the occasional ragged edge; quite solid. Bookseller Inventory # 11756
