About this Item

"Autorisierte Ausgabe." Trade edition of the first German translation of Maeterlinck's The Treasure of the Humble; 4to; pp. 105; slightly later hand-made embroidered and quilted binding on plain brown burlap-like cloth; green floral endpapers; woodcut illustrations and decorations; printed in red and black throughout. Binding depicting three green fish swimming through seedweed and lily pads; sequins employed for the fishes' eyes as well as decorating the seaweed fronds. Small loss to spine crown cloth not affecting embroidery; ownership inscription dated 1903 on title page (original upper wrapper?). Some very shallow losses along end paper extremities due to brittle paperstock, textblock uniformly toned, else very good. A lovely example of both early 20th-century hand-made binding and amateur textile art. Beautifully illustrated trade edition of the German translation of The Treasure of the Humble (Le Trésor des Humbles, 1896). Collection of mystical and reflective essays by the Belgian Symbolist recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature, which he would receive in 1911. This translation includes the essay on Emerson not found in the first English translation (1897). The fish depicted on the binding possibly refer to the animal used as a symbol by the author in his Symbolist play The Intruder in which the rising fish in a moonlit pond indicate the presence of an unknown and sinister figure. (For a brief and more elegant interpretation see John Desmond Peter's Vladimir's Carrot, pp. 268-9.). Bookseller Inventory # 686
