3 volumes bound in 4, folio (32cm x 26cm), [xl, 792 pages, with 13 colour plates, 424 half tone and line illustrations in the text, 16 foldouts, 84 half tone illustrations of the coins, 37 tables, map pocket with 12 items at rear] + [xxvi, 651 pages, with 24 colour plates, 443 half tone and line illustrations in the text, 36 tables] + [xliv, 479 pages + xix, 480-998 pages, with 16 colour plates, 679 half tone and line illustrations in the text], all uniformly bound in navy cloth gilt. A fine bright clean set (probably never used) all in printed navy dustwrappers with minimal wear to some extremities. The Sutton Hoo Ship-burial, excavated in 1939 near Woodbridge in Suffolk, is the finest and most important archaeological find yet made in the British Isles. It is thought that the burial is that of Raedwald, king of East Anglia and high king of the English, who died in 624/5. The burial was set out in a chamber constructed in the centre of the ship and contained objects ranging from jewelled gold fittings to simple domestic vessels. The quality, craftsmanship and imaginative design exhibited by many of the objects is unparalled. In the first volume of this set the site and the excavations are fully described and major topics, including the ship, the coins and the cenotaph problem, are discussed in detail. The second volume is concerned with objects from the burial grouped under the heading of arms, armour and regalia, including the helmet and shield and the magnificent gold and cloisonne garnet jewellery. The third and final volume (which is split into 2 parts and bound in 2 volumes), marks the completion of the publication of all the material excavated in 1939. Under the editorship of Angela Care Evans, the silver, hanging bowls, drinking vessels, cauldrons and containers, textiles, lyre, pottery bottle and other objects are described, illustrated and discussed by specialists and, as in volume 2, the comprehensive programme of scientific examination and analysis undertaken by the British Museum Research Laboratory is presented in a series of appendices to the individual chapters. ers Textiles the Lyre Pottery Bottle and Other Items London: British Museum Publications Limited :-1983 First editions, 1975.
