About this Item: Imprinted [at Eliot?s Court Press] for Hen: Seile, and are to be sold at the Tigres Head in Paules Churchyard,, London:, 1629. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Folio: [34], 536 [i.e. 535], [13] pp. Collation: A4, a-c4, B-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Yyy4, Zzz6 (the final leaf is blank and present). With an added engraved title page and five engraved plates, three of which are folding. Hobbes? Thucydides. The First Edition in a Contemporary Binding Hobbes published his translation in 1629, when he was in his early forties. Yet he tells us in the introduction that the translation, once completed ?lay long by? him, indicating that it had been completed much earlier.?Hobbes was interested in Thucydides less for his style than his subject matter. Nor did he take up the study and translation of the Greek historian simply with a scholar?s antiquarian interest, but with the humanist desire to learn and pass on the lessons of history to his contemporaries. He is not shy of speaking of the utility of history. He talks of Thucydides? writings ?as having in them profitable instruction for Noblemen, and such as may come to have the managing of great and weighty actions.? It is in the history of Thucydides that the purposes of history are most finely embodied: ?For the principall and proper worke of History, being to instruct, and enable men, by the knowledge of Actions past, to beare themselves prudently in the present, and providently towards the Future, there is not extant any other (merely humane) that doth more fully, and naturally performe it, then this of my Author.???Hobbes had very definite ideas about the conclusions to be drawn from Thucydides. In the long introductory essay, ?Of the Life and History of Thucydides?, he derives from the history an account of the political opinions of its author:?For his opinion touching the government of the State, it is manifest that he least of all liked the Democracy. And upon divers occasions, hee noteth the emulation and contention of the Demagogues, for reputation, and glory of wit; with their crossing of each others counsels to the damage of the Publique; the inconstancy of Resolutions, caused by the diversity of ends, and power of Rhetorique in the Orators; and the desperated actions undertaken upon the flattering advice of such as desired to attaine, or to hold what they had attained of authority and sway amongst the common people. Nor doth it appeare, that he magnifieth anywhere the authority of the Few; amongst whom he saith every one desireth to be chiefe; and they that are undervalued, beare it with lesse patience than in a Democracy; whereupon sedition followeth, and dissultion of the government. Hee prayseth the government of Athens, when it was mixed of the Few and the Many; but more he commendeth it, both when Pisistratus raigned (saving that it was an usurped power) and when in the beginning of this Warre, it was Democraticall in name, but in effect Monarchicall under Pericles.??Thucydides here is represented as a closet royalist. The passage to which Hobbes is directly referring, which must have been written after the final defeat of Athens in 404, is Thucydides summary account of the causes of her downfall in Book II. This is a long but crucial passage in Hobbes? translation, a shortcut to the lessons to be learnt from the larger narrative. While there are many factors that contributed to the political philosophy later developed by Hobbes (not least his experience of civil disorder in Britain), it might be argued that the political analysis here of the weakness of the Athenian democracy was influential in defining a problem to which the doctrine of Leviathan was the solution.?(Robin Sowerby, ?Thomas Hobbes? Translation of Thucydides?)"The historical methods of Thucydides, who lived in the fifth century B.C., have never been bettered. His severe standard of historical truth, coupled with his passionate belief in the general significance of particular events, have given his history of the tragic war between Athens and Sparta a universal value to statesmen and historians alike." Provenance: Robert Biddulph Phillipps (with his bookplates to front pastedown). A near fine and wide-margined copy. ---- STC 24058; ESTC S117705; Pforzheimer 493. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, of Hobbes' translation, his first book, and the first English translation from the Greek. "In his verse autobiography Hobbes explained that Thucydides was his favourite ancient historian; what apparently attracted him was the cool dissection of political motivation and the 'realist' approach to power, together with the peculiarly Thucydidean analysis of the role of rhetoric in political debate. This translation was an important achievement, establishing Hobbes at a stroke as one of the leading Grecianists of his day. Hobbes also drew the elaborate map of ancient Greece which accompanied the text" (Noel Malcolm in ONDB). "Thucydides' history of the Peloponnesian war (431-404 B.C.) is renowned as much for establishing historical methods and standards as for its record of one of the most important events in Greek history. Thucydides states that he limited his sources to either personal knowledge or close scrutiny of the evidence of others. In seeking to set forth the facts of the war untainted by hearsay, he created a lasting record which was, as he himself called it, 'a possession for ever'." About this Item: Jodocus Badius, 1527. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. THE FIRST EDITION IN A MODERN LANGUAGE of one of the most important historical works.*****Folio(330 X 230mm). 16 preliminary leaves, 281(CCLXXXI) leaves. Signatures: a8, e8, a-z8, A-L8, M10. Contemporary blind-stamped calf. Spine & covers expertly repaired(remboitage?), lacking final blank(M10). Elaborate woodcut border on the title page and contemporary ownership entry(crossed out). A beautifully printed, wide-margined copy of an important and very rare book. *** The study of Thucydides was part of the Renaissance tradition of turning to Greek and Roman historians to solve the problems of modern politics. Italian humanist and priest, Lorenzo Valla, made the first known Latin translation of Thucydides in 1452. The editio princeps of Thucydides was printed by Aldus in 1502. Claude de Seyssel(1450-1520), the bishop of Marseilles and later Archbishop of Turin, was the first to put the History of the Peloponnesian War into a modern language using Valla s Latin edition. In the prologue, he states that this is one of the translations he has done for the use of King Louis XII, who had found in the Ancients useful lessons for a modern monarch. This book was printed by order of his successor, King Francis I, who was said to have carried it with him into war. The famed printer, Jodocus Badius, was contracted to produce 1225 copies on paper and a few on vellum. In the fifty years following this edition, Thucydides was translated and retranslated into several modern languages. The first English translation, based on this French edition, wouldn t appear until 1550 by Cambridge scholar Thomas Nicolls. Thomas Hobbes well-known translation from the Greek text would appear even later in 1629. Only 3 unique copies appear in sales records. No other appearances since the mid- 1950s. Scarce.***** One of the greatest ancient historians, Thucydides(c.460 B.C. c.400 B.C.) chronicled nearly 30 years of war and tension between Athens and Sparta. His History of the Peloponnesian War set a standard for scope, concision, and accuracy that makes it a defining text of the historical genre. Unlike his near-contemporary Herodotus(author of the other great ancient Greek work, The Histories), Thucydides topic was his own time. He relied on the testimony of eyewitnesses and his own experiences as a general during the war. Though specific in detail, the questions he addressed were timeless: What makes nations go to war? How can politics elevate or poison a society? What is the measure of a great leader or a great democracy? It took several generations for Thucydides to attain his now-unassailed place as one of the greatest historians of all time. Aristotle, who lived a few decades later and wrote about the same era, never mentions him. By the first century B.C. writers such as Cicero declared him as a great historian. Over the next centuries, numerous copies were made of the work, ensuring its survival past the dark ages. After the Renaissance, political philosophers from Thomas Hobbes to Friedrich Nietzsche extolled Thucydides clear vision and realist s grasp of politics and warfare. (A&E)*** In these difficult times, perhaps some inspiration can be gleaned from Pericles famed Funeral Oration for fallen Athenian soldiers(a speech which was possibly a model for Lincoln s Gettysburg Address). Our democracy can only survive if citizens of good will come together for the greater good of the nation. Tolerance, respect for our fellow citizens, and commitment to freedom can be the bulwark against annihilators of truth and fear mongers seeking to corrupt our institutions. ***PLEASE CONTACT US FOR BETTER PRICING. He helped develop many of the modern day thoughts on society and political order, particularly representation of governmental power. Hobbes also took a special interest in classical Greek philosophy, so much so, that he sought to publish a translation of Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War. Until 1629, no English translation of the work had existed. Hobbes was the first from a Greek manuscript. The extensive work covers a brief overview of Greek history and includes explanations as to why the Peloponnesian War began in the first place. "When Thucydides set out to compose his work, the writing of warfare was already a notable tradition launched with a bang by the legendary Homer about three centuries earlier. He was followed 300 years later by Herodotus, who gave an account of the Persian Wars, similarly rich in iconic battles and larger than life personalities on both sides of the conflict. With Thucydides, the writing of war took a new direction. In contrast to the wars of Homer and Herodotus, the armed conflict that concerned Thucydides was fought primarily among Greeks. It also involved events which occurred within the author's lifetime, which introduced a contemporary dimension to the genre. Thucydides focused on offering a strong and authoritative account of the war, its causes, and its behind the scenes negotiations. To this end, he largely left out the gods and religious explanations more generally.Instead, he offered a deel analysis of human factors and motivations" (Finley). In this sense, Thucydides did more than leave historians with an account of the war published close to its conclusion; he created a new expectation for the genre of history and the work of historians.
