Hardcover. [10], 341 p.; 21.5 cm. `The Christian candidate will have to work very hard indeed to win his election. But there are some things he will not have to do. First of all, he will not have to be dishonest. Some advisers will no doubt urge him to be just a little dishonest in order to gain certain votes. But elections are won more often by gaining the full confidence of the people through careful statements than by attempting to mislead them. In the second place, he will not have to put himself under obligation by accepting campaign contributions from wrong sources.' (p. 69) -- `What is required of us is nothing strange or new. What is required is that ownership, and mutual responsibility one to another, and full participation in decision-making in the vital areas of life be regained by the people as they work together in groups. From such experiences come "direct and responsible relations with one another as persons." In such a society economic processes can be made to serve "the needs of the community as a whole." Methods of doing this are tried and tested. They are not unknown. Americans through the years have formed voluntary organizations for the purpose of working together for almost every conceivable purpose. And it is upon the vitality and the broadened scope of those voluntry organizations of the people that this middle way with its restoration of strength to the people themselves can be built.' (p. 126) -- The personal side of his story appears in his books, The confessions of a congressman 1947, and, The strange case of Richard Milhous Nixon 1972. Good ex-lib. edgeworn ivory cloth. Pencil marking in index.

Softcover. 1st edition. [5], 91 p.: photograph of author on title-page; 22.5 cm. Inscription on flyleaf written and signed by author. -- Note on front page [3] by Hugh O. La Bounty, president of Cal Poly from 1978-91. -- From the author's foreword on p. [5]: `A fellow like me can spend a life-time--as I have--writing articles, even books, making speeches and expressing myself in many ways. But deeper down inside us reside and sometimes stir thoughts and feelings that go beyond the concerns of day to day vocational activity. These are the thoughts and feelings that you are a little shy about--that you are just a bit reluctant to expose. Until you come near to the end of the road-- Then you reread the old wrinkled, dog-eared manuscripts and you find the some of them, at least, have a true appeal--in other words "aren't so bad." -- Jerry Voorhis introduced himself well in his preface to `The strange case of Richard Milhous Nixon' 1972: `The author of this book was the first victim of the Nixon-Chotiner formula for political success. But as events developed, my defeat was, from a purely personal point of view, almost a blessing. It gave me three months of unharried time to finish writing my book, Confessions of a Congressman. And at the end of that short period of unemployment, I was selected for the very job I had most wanted. The job was that of Executive Director of the Cooperative League of the U.S.A. It gave me opportunity to work at building "grass roots" economic and social organizations and enterprises--a satisfying the rewarding task. As time passed, I came to feel that perhams Mr. Nixon and Mr. Chotiner had done me a personal favor in 1946.' VG tan wrapper, rear cover lightly creased. A few ink markings.
