Although dated 1919 to both title and copyright pages, with no later dates, this is the "second state" or "second issue," with text corrected on page 5, line 16, to read ". . . arrived furnished with proper credentials and who apparently . . ." The words "Milford House" are written to blank FFE in an age-appropriate ink. This would appear to identify a place rather than a person, and there are of course a number of '"Milford Houses" in the English-speaking world, from the 19th Century former seat of the Mc Crum family in Armagh to the historic Marshall M. Milford House in Attica, Indiana, with many a commercial eating establishment of that name scattered in between. This copy is "good-plus" with a minor (quarter-inch) spine lean. 385 pp.

Rescued from a burned-out village, 11-year-old amnesiac Emma "turns out to have a killer instinct with a bow and arrow." Well, yes, bows are certainly more deadly when used with "arrows," and 1141 probably is a bit early for longbows, with their draw weights of 90 to 160 lbs. Though the assertion here that the crossbow had a greater effective range than a trained archer might have surprised the victims of the British archers at Crecy and Agincourt. Author Franklin died in 2011 while writing this book; it was presumably completed by her daughter, Samantha Norman. As completed, it's a woman's book, its denouement more concerned with marriages and "living happily ever after" than anyone getting her revenge with a "bow and arrow." 338 pp., reduced from $12.

Biggers' third Charlie Chan mystery; yellow boards stamped in purple. 1928 is only date showing, but while this is an early printing in jacket, it's not the true first -- no bow-and-arrow device to copyright page, as required. Not price clipped; original $2.00 price showing. Producer William Fox chose his 1929 film adaptation -- an early talkie -- to open his palatial Fox Theatre in San Francisco on June 28, 1929. The film starred William Baxter and the immortal Lois Moran, and featured Boris Karloff as Baxter's manservant, but oddly reduced the role of Korean-American Actor E.L. Park -- playing Police Inspector Chan -- to little more than a walk-on, appearing only 75 minutes into the film. 337 pp.
