About this Item: Pudney & Russell, New York City. Spiral/Comb. Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. Early days in Seven Counties of Northwest Georgia are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 50 Page Spiral-bound Booklet reprinted from White's Historical Collections of Georgia, and another hard-to find book: Georgia, a Guide to Its Towns and Countryside, a WPA publication. This booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet protects the three-color front cover. Past and/or present area communities include: ( Some of these are not named in the booklet. *County Seat) BARTOW (formerly Cass County) -- Adairsville, *Cartersville , Cassville, Emerson, Euharlee, Kingston, Rydal, Taylorsville (part), White; CATOOSA -- Fort Oglethorpe (part), Graysville, *Ringgold (originally in Walker County), Rossville; CHATTOOGA -- Cloudland, Lyerly, Menlo, *Summerville, Trion; DADE -- Rising Fawn, *Trenton, Wildwood; FLOYD -- Armuchee, Cave Spring, Coosa, DeSota, Hillsborough, Lindale, Mount Berry, *Rome, Shannon, Silver Creek; GORDON -- *Calhoun, Fairmount, New Echota, Oakman, Oostenaula, Oothcologa, Plainville, Ranger, Resaca, Siloquoy, Sugar Valley; WALKER -- Chickamauga, Flintstone, Fort Oglethorpe (part), *LaFayette, Lookout Mountain, Rock Spring, Rossville. The excerpt from White's book concerns the development of this area up to its publication date, while excerpts from the WPA book, offer a nostalgic glimpse from a mid-20th Century vantage point, including historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. Among the many and diverse topics included from the older book are: Early Settlers, Physical Features, Agriculture, Industries, Transportation Systems, 1850 Census Extracts, Instances of Longevity; the Cherokee Alphabet, invented by Sequoia (George Guess); DeSoto's travels in Floyd County; Ancient Mounds and a Saltpetre Cave in Bartow County and Wilson's Cave in Walker County; Old Indian Towns; Where names came from; Deaf and Dumb Asylum in Rome; Battle between Whites and Indians in 1793 near Rome; Cave Spring, Medicinal Springs, Catoosa Springs and others; Bio of William Washington Gordon; First Grand Jurors of Gordon County; a Wild Indian Ballgame, and other interesting bits of history and trivia.
