Hard Cover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. This account, following on from Unicorns - The History of the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry 1794- 1899, covers the Regiments war service between 1900 and 1945.During the Boer War the SRY formed part of the first volunteer unit to see active service overseas fighting the Boer Commandos as cavalry. For its role in the ill-fated 1915 Gallipoli campaign, the Regiment was awarded the Kings Colour and then fought Allenbys victorious campaign against the Turks.During the Second World War the Regiment initially saw service in Palestine, at the siege of Tobruk and the fall of Crete. After acting as Special Forces in Ethiopia, they were converted to armour and fought through from Alamein to Tripoli before returning to North-west Europe for D-Day and the advance to Germany. In so doing they won thirty Battle Honours and 159 awards including eighty-three for gallantry.General Sir Brian Horrocks later wrote no armoured regiment can show a finer record of hard fighting. Hence the title of this invaluable regimental history. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Hardback. Condition: New. New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Jonathan Hunt's superbly researched Unicorns reveals that the history of the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry is inextricably linked to that of its home county of Nottinghamshire. Formed in 1794, as part of the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry, the Regiment had a primarily policing role until the mid-nineteenth century. This was a turbulent period with fears of revolutionary contagion and Napoleonic invasion. Social unrest took the form of the Bread Riots, Luddism, Republicanism, Reform Bill riots and, finally, the Chartist uprisings. The old order represented by Nottinghamshire's great landed gentry and other property owners struggled to control the aspirations of the middle and working classes during the Industrial Revolution and the Regiment was a powerful tool in doing this. By 1850 the nascent police force assumed the Regiment's role and it became a reserve Hussar unit. Now resplendent in green and gold uniforms, 'the colours of gorse in bloom', the Regiment regularly paraded in front of large crowds at Newark, Retford, Mansfield and Worksop. For all the glamour the SRY was highly professional but little did they realise how they were about to be tested.
