William Earle Johns, better known as Captain W. E. Johns the creator of Biggles, probably wrote this romantic flying adventure during a short period of unemployment after discharge from the R.A.F. in 1919. Mossyface was first published as a paperback in September 1922 by John Leng in their Weekly Telegraph Novel series [No. 121], a cheaply produced publication of which few survive. This, combined with Johns use of the pseudonym William Earle, which early collectors of his works failed to recognise, makes Mossyface a very rare item. Member of the P.B.F.A. JOHNS, Captain W. E.
