About this Item: Goverment Printing Office, Washington, D.C., 1869. Leather. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 141p. A very good copy, with a dime-sized stain (blood?) at the bottom of the first eleven pages (not near the text), there is also a palm-sized stain at the bottom corner of the front endpapers, the contemporary full-leather binding (according to Orr this book was issued in paper) shows wear along the fore-edges and especially at the forecorners and the spine is a bit scratched. The gold lettering on the front cover is nice and bright. The three full-page engravings are in fine condition. Seventy-one additional illustrations accompany the text. Tipped-in at the back, before the unnumbered table of contents, is a four item corrigenda. Orr points out that "A portrait of Otis as a handsome lad of 12 years hangs in the National Library at Washington. The painting is by Sully, 1843."
