About this Item

Modern morocco-backed boards, gilt lettering on spine, elaborate chapter vignettes, pages slightly browned, but overall a good copy. An interesting treatise on the benefits of a new drug to cure gout, rheumatism, jaundice, stone and gravel, and asthma, with testimonies of numerous satisfied users. Bateman's Pectoral Drops are now official in the National Formulary under the title of Compound Tincture of Opium and Gambir. This was a period of change in the apothecary practices and guild power. Buying and selling of drugs was very profitable, and memberships in the guilds were constantly changing in order to dispense medicine. Hence the notice on the imprint: "any shopkeeper, &c. may be furnished with these Drops, with good allowance to sell again . . ." In this work, the persons to contact were printers with membership in the leathersellers' company. In addition, legal ramifications of counterfeits are stated. Bookseller Inventory # 14263
