April 18, 1689. London: Printed for Ric. Chiswell, 1689. 1st ed. 20pp. Small 4to. Full modern mottled calf, red morocco spine label. Covers slightly bowed, else near fine in a custom cloth clamshell box. Alden & Landis 698/28. ESTC R17463.Church 708. Sabin 9708. Wing B6379. First edition of the first Andros tract, recording one of the first American rebellions against British rule. Sir Edmund Andros (1637-1714) was appointed by Charles II as the first governor of the Dominion of New England in 1686 and implemented a system of taxation widely resisted by those living in Massachusetts Bay Colony, which had no pre-existing tax laws. As a result of tax protests, Andros implemented a law limiting local towns from holding meetings more than once per year. Amid much dissent, and following the restoration of James II to the throne, agents of Massachusetts petitioned in the autumn of 1688 in England for the restoration of the old Massachusetts charter. Andros was overthrown in the spring of 1689, following a revolt in Boston on April 18. Byfield (1653-1733), a merchant at Bristol and later a prominent Massachusetts judge, explains the back and forth of the events of April 18 in a brief letter to his London friends on pp. 1-6. This is followed by Increase Mather's "Declaration of the Gentlemen, Merchants, and Inhabitants of Boston, and the Country Adjacent" (pp. 7-19), outlines the injustices perpetrated by Andros and his supporters. This was read out in the Council House before Andros' arrest. The final page (p. 20) prints a letter to Andros signed by prominent Boston citizens, calling for his surrender "otherwise we are assured they will endeavour the taking of the Fortification by storm, if any opposition be made.".
