1933. First edition. [v], 307pp. This is a fascinating picture of Liverpool life in the early years of the 20th century. Born into abject poverty in one of the city s worst slums, Pat O Mara chronicles a tough childhood dominated by a brutal, alcoholic father. Survival is paramount but there is no room for sentimentality in this remarkable account of one man s fight to escape the drabness and poverty that surrounds him. The book is probably best regarded as being a sound reading and reference copy as the boards have shelf wear with some soiling and fading and the spine ends and corners are bumped. The spine is faded and the titling on the spine is worn and indistinct. There is also damage to the cloth at both spine ends. The contents are in better condition being tight and clean apart from soiling on the endpapers and some marks, probably from finger smudges, on pages 24 and 25. There is a stunning art deco style bookplate on the front fixed endpaper indicatng that the book belonged to A. Aubrey Bodine (1906-1970), who was a noted American photographer and photo-journalist. The front free endpaper has a previous owner's name written on the top edge and a signed inscription from the author that reads "To Aubrey Bodine, for making such an excellent picture - Pat O'Mara June 25, 1933". Size: 8.3" Tall. Seller Inventory # Ireland305
