First Printing, wrappered issue, one of 1,900 copies. Octavo (20.5cm); original pictorial card wrappers; [xiv],76,[2]pp; illus. Inscribed by Norse on the front endpaper to Bob Kaufman and his girlfriend, Lynne Wildey: "For Bob Kauman & Lynne / With love / Harold Norse." Gently spine-sunned, lightly edgeworn, with three small stains to rear wrapper, and a tiny stain to the lower corner tips of a few preliminary leaves; Very Good+. An important copy of the Bay Area poet's surreal cut-up novella, originally published in Germany in 1975, centered around Paris's fabled hub for writers and artists at 9 Rue Gît-le-Coeur. Like Norse, Kaufman (1925-1986) was a prominent Bay Area figure a Beat poet, surrealist, and jazz performance artist who often wandered the streets of North Beach reciting poetry. Both poets were frequent contributors to the many little magazines of the period, and Norse published Kaufman's work in his short-lived journal Bastard Angel. Kaufman's life was one marked by numerous difficulties, including a series of incarcerations, drug addiction, and psychiatric treatments; by the time of this inscription, the "Black American Rimbaud" had, after a prolonged period of hard times, received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and published a volume of late poetry before his death in 1986 of cirrhosis and emphysema.
